Preview - Group A: Uzbekistan v Turkmenistan

Uzbekistan tasted continental success in 2018 when they defeated Vietnam 2-1 for their maiden title and despite home advantage, Kapadze said his team will not underestimate any of their opponents.

“We want to start the tournament on a positive note when we face Turkmenistan,” said Kapadze. “Maybe there is a little bit of nerves coming into Matchday One as we’ve won this tournament before but I’m certain my team will put in a good performance, especially with our fans supporting us. Their presence will give us extra motivation.

“Our aim is simple and that is to qualify for the next stage of the tournament. We will chart our progress one step at a time and then we will see and address our plans for the tournament. Every team in this group is prepared to do well and that includes Turkmenistan. We are prepared to face a tough team tomorrow.”

Uzbekistan played in the Dubai Cup in March - earning a win, a draw and a defeat. However, a 2-0 win against Tajikistan in a friendly last week showed they are ready and Kapadze is confident his team will shine.

“I’m pleased with how we have prepared for this tournament. Maybe there was not enough time to do all that we wanted to do but I’m confident we have the best players available in all positions and hopefully, it will help us throughout the tournament.”
Turkmenistan are playing in the tournament for the first time after finishing as the third best runners-up in the qualifiers with head coach Ahmet Agamyradow insisting that his side are ready to take on Asia’s best.

“The AFC U23 Asian Cup is a big tournament and this is the first time we’re playing at this level,” said Agamyradow. “I’m proud of the players and what they achieved in the qualifiers to be here. The first match is always the hardest but we will go in ready to perform."
“We’re playing against a strong Uzbekistan side, who have home ground advantage. It’s going to be a huge match for us, especially some of the players who have never played continental football.

“This tournament will undoubtedly be good for the development of Turkmenistan football. It is also good for the players as it will give them the opportunity to showcase their talent on the continental stage.”
Agamyradow said despite Turkmenistan being ranked as outsiders, his players are determined to impress.

“The first aim for us is to reach the next stage of the tournament. In our opponents’ minds, we’re outsiders and that may be a plus for us as we can spring a surprise. Maybe our football will not be beautiful for the fans but we want to reach our target.”
